Magazine

Bitterne Local History Society publishes a quarterly Magazine, distributed to all members in January, April, July and October. It is delivered or posted to those members unable to attend the appropriate monthly meeting.

As well as purely local news about Society activities the Magazines invariably contain articles on particular topics of local history or the results of a member's research in a specialised area. Recent examples of this are:

  • Shopping in Bitterne in the 1950's.
  • Extracts from the Southampton Court Leet Records of 1603.
  • History of Scouting in Itchen.
  • Extracts from the Southampton Times & Hampshire Express of July 7th 1883:-
  • Article on the history of Mummers
  • Family history of the Lumb family who resided in Bitterne in the 1840's.
  • Computerised search facilities on the 1844 Tithe Map for the Bitterne area
  • Hints on using local archives.
  • History of pillar boxes.
  • 1844 Tithe records of land in Bitterne owned by John Sennett.
  • The will of John Tanner made in 1575.
  • Research on the shooting down of a German Heinkel plane over Southampton in 1941 and the fate of its crew.

These are but a few examples of the varied and interesting local history articles that would be available to members on the Internet.
